Our guides exist to help you pick a bulb that fits the fixture and the room.

Sources

When a guide gives a figure on brightness, cost or bulb life, it names the source: the Federal Trade Commission, the U.S. Department of Energy or ENERGY STAR. Quotes are exact, with a link and the date we read the page.

Limits

A guide also covers what a product does not do. A frosted A19 does not dim. A color corner lamp will not light a page. A bulb sold as a 60-watt equivalent may give the lumens of a 40-watt bulb, and then its name gives the lumens.

Ratings

Star ratings are the averages buyers gave at our retail partner, with the number of ratings beside them.
